Run the Edinburgh Marathon for FREE!

LOCAL health charity, Health in Mind, is offering runners free places in the Edinburgh Marathon Festival – in return for raising sponsorship for them.

Explains a spokesperson: “Mental health is something that touches many lives in different ways – from stress, depression and anxiety through to isolation and loneliness, and the charity is looking for support so they can help more people in the Lothians.”

Health in Mind’s community fundraiser, Katherine Sellar, says that she would be delighted for more people to join Team Health in Mind.

“Whether you are fast or slow we would be so proud to have you run for us and by supporting Health in Mind, you will be helping to provide vital mental health and wellbeing services to local people,” said Katherine.

“There are clear links between exercise and improved mental health, so this is the perfect challenge if this is a cause close to your heart.

“Run for us and we will give you a Health in Mind running vest to wear, lots of tips and support to boost your fundraising and a lovely group of people on the day cheering you on!

“Most importantly, though, you will be helping a local charity support even more people experiencing mental health problems and you will help us to raise awareness about what we do.”

Now in its 14th year, this popular and ever-growing Marathon festival takes place in Scotland’s capital city on 28 and 29 May and continues through East Lothian, offering stunning views and an unforgettable running experience.

The Edinburgh Marathon Festival is recognised as Scotland’s largest running festival of its kind with over 30,000 runners expected to take part in 2016. There are seven races on offer over two days including the Marathon, half-Marathon, team relay, 10k, 5k and junior races. There really is something for everyone!

Katherine continued: “The Edinburgh Marathon has been rated as the fastest Marathon in the UK by Runner’s World magazine.

“It runs eastwards from the city centre to the finish in Musselburgh and drops 40 metres in altitude on the way.

“The maximum allowable drop for an official International Association of Athletics Federation course is 42, which is one metre per kilometre, so it makes it a perfect choice for someone running a Marathon for the first time or a Marathon regular, determined to set a personal best time.

“Only one per cent of the population has ever run a Marathon – so no matter how slow you run, you are still passing everybody on the couch!”
