PEER SUPPORT GROUP LOOKS TO TAKE NEXT STEP IN WEST LOTHIAN

Our peer led anxiety and depression group is looking for new volunteers to allow the service to expand to new areas within West Lothian.

We organise monthly peer support groups, which are open to anyone experiencing anxiety and depression. The groups are facilitated by peer volunteers who have their own experience of recovery from anxiety and depression.

‘We want to offer more regular support across West Lothian’ said Hayley Chandler, Development Worker at Health in Mind.

‘To be able to do this we are on the search for new volunteers who, after training, can facilitate the group. We are looking for kind, supportive people who can commit to one evening a month for a couple of hours to help other people on their recovery journey.

'Volunteering and giving your time can also help your own wellbeing. The peer group volunteers gain a lot from the groups and find can find them therapeutic.'

‘After experiencing anxiety and depression and learning what helped me I wanted to give back and support others’ said Anne Bisset, peer group volunteer. ‘I enjoy facilitating and being part of the group in Livingston and we all benefit from it.’

Lynne Walker, Peer Group Volunteer said ‘I really get a lot out of facilitating a peer support group. I have been there myself and would have benefitted greatly from attending one in the past. Being part of the group and helping others has been really therapeutic for me.’

The current group is held monthly at Crofthead Farm Community Centre in Dedridge on the first Wednesday of the month from 7-9pm.

If you would like to find out more about the group or are interested in volunteering at a new group, please get in touch with Hayley Chandler.
