In February, we held the very first meeting of our new Lived Experience Steering Group- a milestone in strengthening how we design, deliver, and improve mental health support across Health in Mind. This group has been created because we believe something simple but powerful: the best solutions emerge when everyone’s voice is heard .

Why we established the group

For many years, people who use our services have told us that being listened to – really listened to and heard – makes the biggest difference. We also know that mental health support is at its strongest when shaped by those who understand it from the inside.

The Steering Group brings together people with lived experience of mental health challenges, trauma, recovery, or using mental health services. Their insight helps us stay grounded in real‑world experience, challenge assumptions, and ensure our decisions reflect what truly matters to the people we support. Steering Group members’ perspectives will help shape, improve, and evaluate Health in Mind services, policies, and practices.

This group is not a consultation exercise. It is a long‑term commitment to co‑design, shared decision‑making, and continuous learning.

What happened at the first meeting

Sixteen members joined us—some in person, some online—for a gentle, welcoming first session. We spent time co‑creating the foundations of psychological safety. Members agreed on behaviours that will guide how we work together, including confidentiality, compassion, listening without interruption, and taking breaks whenever needed. The group also introduced simple ways to signal when someone needs space or support, including using “pause” if a conversation becomes difficult or triggering.

What members told us

In small groups, members shared what would help the Steering Group feel meaningful and manageable. They told us they would like:

  • more understanding of what Health in Mind does
  • updates between meetings to stay connected
  • opportunities to build a sense of community
  • agendas shared in advance, with space to shape them
  • a balance of meaningful work and lighter, creative moments

Members also emphasised that people will contribute in different ways—and that this diversity should be welcomed.

What happens next

The group agreed to meet every six to eight weeks to begin with.  After each session, members will receive a clear summary of decisions, actions, and how their input is being used—reflecting our commitment to transparency and accountability.

This first meeting was warm, thoughtful, and full of generosity. Members brought honesty, curiosity, and a shared desire to make mental health support better for everyone.

We are deeply grateful to every member who has chosen to share their time, insight, and experience with us. Their voices will help shape the future of Health in Mind and we are excited for what we will build together.
