A year ago, in spring of 2023, Health in Mind launched our five-year strategy, Sharing Hope.

Although the strategy is designed to inform our work until 2028, it’s vital to make sure that Health in Mind stays flexible, responsive, and adapts as we learn and change, so that the support we provide stays tailored to the needs of those engaging with it.

It was with this in mind that Health in Mind staff from around Scotland came together in Edinburgh this week to reflect on what we’ve learnt in our first year delivering this strategy, and to explore ways to keep improving the quality, accessibility and sustainability of our work.

As well as hearing about exciting new developments to keep our services linked up and person-led in a time of change, staff discussed the best ways to make sure Health in Mind stays a collaborative force for positive change. Attendees discussed ways to build on our successes – sharing what we’ve learned, fitting services to people, and being honest and transparent if we think there are better ways to meet the needs of people accessing our services.

Staff also discussed ways to proactively address challenges faced by many seeking mental health support in Scotland at the moment, including exploring ways to improve people’s experience when waiting for support, making sure they have access to interim support, and helping connect up services within and outwith Health in Mind so that people looking for support can have access to the right kind of support for where they’re at in their journey.

Wendy Bates, Chief Executive at Health in Mind, said,

“People are at the heart of all we do at Health in Mind, and collaboration and codevelopment is how we make sure we stay focussed, adaptable, and responsive to what people actually need from us.

It’s so important that our strategy isn’t just a set of abstract ideas, but a live process which guides our work so we can keep delivering the best support possible in the most sustainable ways.

The Strategy Gathering this week is just one of many ways we keep collaboration at the heart of our work, and it’s been a great chance for us all to get together, share our knowledge and experience, and have these vital conversations. There was such a lovely buzz in the room with lots of conversation and laughter, as well as reflection and planning.”
